What makes an extraction simple or surgical?
A simple extraction is a tooth that is fully through the gum and can be loosened and lifted out in one piece. A surgical extraction is anything that needs the gum opened, bone removed or the tooth cut into sections: a tooth broken off at the gum line, a tooth with curved or fused roots, or an impacted wisdom tooth. The dentist usually knows which it will be from the x-ray, so ask before you start.
What else is on the bill?
Most practices charge for the consultation and an x-ray as well as the extraction. In the same survey a consultation for a specific problem has an Auckland median of $80 and a single x-ray $30. A panoramic x-ray, often taken before wisdom teeth come out, has a median of $110. IV sedation, if you want or need it, is a separate fee with a median of $585.
Where can I get a tooth out for $40 in Auckland?
Health NZ's Hospital and Specialist Dentistry service runs a relief-of-pain clinic at Greenlane Clinical Centre for adults with a Community Services Card, at $40 on the day. It treats pain and infection, which often means an extraction, and it is not a general dental service. Phone (09) 630 9809 to check eligibility and how to be seen. The Healthpoint listing has current hours.
Niho Ora ki Manukau (AUT oral health clinic) also has a $40 course of care for card holders, but it does not do same-day relief of pain, so it suits planned care rather than a tooth that hurts today. All the free and subsidised routes.
Is it cheaper to pull a tooth than to save it?
On the day, yes: a simple extraction at $300 against a root canal from $1,100 plus a crown at $1,700. Over time it often isn't. A missing back tooth lets the neighbours drift and the opposite tooth over-erupt, and replacing it later with an implant (fixture $2,600 and crown $2,900 at the median) or a bridge ($4,500) costs more than saving it would have. Ask the dentist what happens if the gap is left.
