Who can get free or subsidised dental care in New Zealand?

Anyone under 18 gets basic care free. Low-income adults can ask Work and Income for help with emergency treatment. ACC covers damage caused by an accident. In Auckland, adults with a Community Services Card can also use Health NZ’s relief-of-pain clinic and AUT’s low-cost teaching clinic.

Is dental care free for children in New Zealand?

Basic dental care is publicly funded up to the eighteenth birthday. Pre-school and primary age children are seen through community dental services, often at school or a community clinic. From about Year 9, teenagers enrol with a dental practice that provides the care under contract.

It covers examinations, x-rays, fillings and extractions. It does not cover braces or aligners chosen for appearance. If your child is not enrolled anywhere, Health New Zealand explains how to arrange it.

Can Work and Income help with a dental bill?

Work and Income can contribute towards emergency dental treatment through a Special Needs Grant. The purpose is relieving pain and dealing with infection rather than routine maintenance or cosmetic work. The amount, how often it can be claimed and the income test are all set by Work and Income and do change.

Take the current figures from them rather than from a guide like this one, and contact them before committing to treatment if you can, because approval in advance is more straightforward than reimbursement afterwards. Special Needs Grant at Work and Income.

Does ACC cover dental treatment?

ACC covers dental damage caused by an accident. A tooth broken playing sport, chipped in a fall or damaged by a blow to the face is an injury, and treatment to repair it may be covered. Decay, wear and grinding are not accidents and are not covered.

Your dentist lodges the claim, which means the important step is yours: say at the appointment that the damage was caused by an accident, and when. A cracked tooth mentioned three visits later is much harder to claim. Injuries ACC covers.

What if none of these apply?

The Auckland dental costs guide shows what practices typically charge, so you can tell whether a quote is in the usual range.
