Cosmetic dentistry in Auckland
Cosmetic work is where the price range in Auckland is widest and where the trade-offs are least explained. The important division is between treatments that leave the tooth intact and treatments that remove enamel permanently — because the second kind commits you to maintaining that work for the rest of your life.

What does cosmetic dentistry include?
Cosmetic dentistry covers treatments chosen to change how teeth look rather than to fix a functional problem: whitening, composite bonding, porcelain veneers, crowns used cosmetically, and clear aligners. Some are reversible and some permanently alter the tooth, which is the distinction that matters most before committing.
What does each treatment involve?
Below are 5 treatments. Each entry sets out what happens in the appointment, the variables that move what an Auckland practice quotes, and, where the NZDA survey covers it, what Auckland practices charge.
Teeth whitening
A peroxide gel lifts staining from within the enamel, either in the chair in one appointment or with custom trays you wear at home over a couple of weeks. It does not change the shape of the tooth and does not lighten crowns, veneers or fillings.
What changes the price: In-chair is faster and costs more than take-home trays; whether trays are custom-made from impressions or generic; how many shades you want to move; whether top-up gel is included.
Auckland median: whitening, take-home kit $450; whitening, in the chair $650
Composite bonding
Tooth-coloured resin is shaped directly onto the tooth to close a gap, rebuild a chip or reshape an edge, usually in a single appointment with little or no enamel removed. It can be repaired and, in most cases, reversed.
What changes the price: How many teeth; how much shaping is involved — an edge repair is quick, reshaping several front teeth is an artistic job charged by time; the operator’s skill, which is the main variable in how natural it looks.
Auckland median: veneer, composite $550
Porcelain veneers
Thin porcelain shells bonded to the front of the teeth. Enamel is usually removed first to make room, which is permanent — once a tooth is prepared for a veneer it will always need one. Made in a laboratory, so at least two visits.
What changes the price: The number of teeth, and this is charged per tooth so a full upper arch is a large sum; the laboratory used; whether a diagnostic mock-up is done first; whether the underlying teeth need treatment beforehand.
Auckland median: veneer, porcelain $1,695
Crowns used cosmetically
A full cap over the tooth, covering more of it than a veneer. Chosen when a tooth is both damaged and visible, so the cosmetic result and the structural repair are the same job.
What changes the price: Material; laboratory versus in-house milling; whether root canal treatment is needed first, which is a separate and significant cost.
Auckland median: crown, ceramic $1,700
Clear aligners
A series of removable clear trays that move teeth gradually over months. Treats the position of teeth rather than their surface, so it changes a crooked smile without removing enamel.
What changes the price: How much movement is needed and therefore how many trays and how long; whether a general dentist or an orthodontist supervises it; whether retainers and refinements are included in the quoted fee — ask, because this varies a lot.

Before treatment, ask for a written quote and ask what is not included: for root canal treatment, whether the crown afterwards is in the figure; for aligners, whether retainers and refinements are. All Auckland dental costs.
Common questions
How long does teeth whitening last?
Most people find they want a top-up within one to three years, though it fades faster depending on what you drink and whether you smoke. Coffee, tea and red wine restain enamel, which is why take-home trays are often better value than a single in-chair session — you keep the trays.
Are veneers reversible?
Generally no. Where enamel has been removed to fit the veneer, that enamel does not grow back, so the tooth will need a veneer or crown from then on. Some very thin veneers require minimal preparation, but this depends on your teeth. Composite bonding is the option that usually leaves the tooth intact.
Is composite bonding or a veneer better for a chipped front tooth?
They solve it differently. Bonding is done in one visit, costs less, keeps the tooth intact and can be repaired, but it stains over time and typically needs redoing after several years. A veneer lasts longer and resists staining, but costs more and usually means removing enamel permanently. A dentist who has examined the tooth can tell you which is realistic for it.
Does health insurance or ACC cover cosmetic dentistry?
Treatment chosen for appearance is generally not covered by ACC, which covers injury. Health insurance policies differ and many exclude cosmetic work specifically, so check your own policy wording. Where a tooth was chipped in an accident, ACC may contribute to the repair — that is an injury claim, not a cosmetic one.
How do I check a cosmetic dentist is properly registered?
Search the Dental Council of New Zealand register, which is public and free. It shows whether a practitioner holds a current annual practising certificate and any conditions on their practice. "Cosmetic dentist" is not a protected specialty in New Zealand, so anyone registered as a dentist may offer cosmetic work.
