How much is a full dental check-up?
"Full check-up" usually means three things on one visit: an examination, bitewing x-rays and a scale and polish. The NZDA 2025 fee survey prices that bundle at a national median of $210 and an Auckland median of $250. A quarter of Auckland practices charge more than $305. If a practice quotes only "$85 for a check-up", that is most likely the examination on its own, and the x-rays and clean will be added.
What is included in a dental check-up?
The examination is the dentist looking at every tooth, your gums, old fillings and crowns, your bite, and the soft tissue of the mouth for anything unusual. Bitewing x-rays, usually two, show decay between the back teeth that can't be seen by eye. The scale and polish removes hardened tartar above and just below the gum line and polishes off staining. At the end you should be told what, if anything, needs doing and what it will cost.
- Examination: $85 Auckland median.
- Bitewing x-rays: included in the $120 exam-and-x-ray fee, or about $30 a film on their own.
- Scale and polish: priced per 15 minutes, $95 median, unless it's bundled.
- Panoramic x-ray (OPG), only when needed, for example to check wisdom teeth: $110.
What does a first visit as a new patient cost?
Often more than a routine recall, because the dentist is starting with no records and the first clean can take longer if it has been a while. At the Auckland medians, a new patient who needs a 30-minute clean, priced item by item, adds up to:
- Examination and bitewing x-rays $120.
- Scale and polish, 2 × 15 minutes at $95 = $190.
- Total $310, against $250 for the bundled check-up-and-clean price. Ask whether a practice's bundle has a time limit on the clean, and whether a panoramic x-ray ($110) is likely on a first visit.
How often do you need a dental check-up?
It depends on your own risk of decay and gum disease, and your dentist should set the interval rather than a fixed calendar. Six months is the familiar number, but the UK's NICE guideline on dental recall, which many dentists use, sets adult intervals anywhere from 3 to 24 months. Someone with healthy gums and no new fillings in years may be fine yearly or longer; someone with gum disease, a dry mouth or frequent decay may need cleans every few months.
Why does Auckland cost more than the national median?
For the check-up bundle it does: $250 in Auckland against $210 nationally, about $40 more. Rent and wages are higher in Auckland, and the clean is the most time-based part of the visit. For the examination alone the gap goes the other way: $85 in Auckland against $90 nationally. Comparing item by item, not by the headline price, is the way to tell a cheap check-up from a short one.
Where can I get a cheap or free dental check-up?
Children and teenagers get free basic dental care in New Zealand until their 18th birthday, including check-ups, through the community oral health service and then a contracted dentist (see free and subsidised dental care). For adults in Auckland, the cheapest routine option is Niho Ora ki Manukau (AUT oral health clinic): $60 for a full course of care, $40 with a Community Services Card, treated by students under supervision over several appointments. Work and Income's dental grant does not cover routine check-ups, only immediate and essential treatment.
Is skipping check-ups cheaper in the long run?
Rarely. Decay caught at a check-up is usually a one-surface filling at a median of $280. Left until it hurts, the same tooth can need a root canal ($1,300 for a premolar) and a crown ($1,700), or an extraction. A $250 check-up once a year costs less than one of those.
