Braces and Invisalign cost in Auckland

What Auckland orthodontists and dentists publish for braces and clear aligners, side by side, with what each fee includes and the questions that change the quote.

Updated 23 October 2026

There is no set fee for orthodontics in New Zealand, and the NZDA fee survey does not cover it, so these figures come from Auckland practices' own published price lists. Specialist orthodontic treatment at Milk Orthodontics starts at $7,900 for simple cases and $9,900 for comprehensive ones, most commonly $10,400. General dentists publish fixed braces from about $4,000 to $12,500 and clear aligners from $3,000 to $12,000, depending on how far the teeth have to move.

Why is there such a spread?

The New Zealand Association of Orthodontists puts it plainly: there is no set fee for orthodontic visits, and fees vary with the type of treatment, how long it runs and who you see. Three things explain most of the spread in the tables above.

  • **How far the teeth have to move.** Milk Orthodontics prices by case, from mild crowding at $7,900 to a highly complex case at $12,900, and All Smiles Dental's Invisalign tiers run from Express at $3,500 to Comprehensive at $9,750 or more. A tidy-up of six front teeth is a different job from correcting a bite.
  • **Specialist or general dentist.** A specialist orthodontist has done three further years of full-time university study after qualifying as a dentist, and generally charges more. General dentists commonly take straightforward aligner cases; complex bites, growth problems in children and surgical cases are where specialist training matters. Our orthodontics guide covers the distinction.
  • **What the fee includes.** Milk's prices bundle records, scans, every appointment and the retainers. All Smiles lists the consultation ($150) and retainers ($300 an arch) as separate lines. Two quotes a few thousand dollars apart can be closer than they look once you add up what is and is not in each.

Are braces free for under-18s?

No. Basic dental care is free in New Zealand up to the 18th birthday, but Health NZ's dental care page says you will need to pay for some treatments, giving orthodontics, which includes braces, as its example. Healthpoint's under-18 page says the same. Limited public funding exists only for severe cases, typically cleft lip and palate or significant jaw abnormalities, through hospital services on referral, and a general dentist or orthodontist can tell you whether a referral is worth making.

That means a teenager's braces are a private cost for almost every Auckland family, which is why the payment plans above matter. Ask what the deposit is, how long the plan runs and whether the price is fixed once treatment starts.

Braces or Invisalign: which is cheaper?

At a specialist, often neither. Milk Orthodontics charges the same case price whether you choose braces or clear aligners, because the work is the planning and supervision rather than the appliance. At general dentists the appliances are priced separately, and a short aligner case is the cheapest route: All Smiles lists Invisalign Express at $3,500 and Dentalcare West has aligners from $3,000, against fixed braces from $4,000 and $6,500 respectively. Once a case is comprehensive, the aligner price catches up with or passes braces.

Aligners only work while they are worn, usually 20 to 22 hours a day, so the cheaper option on paper can become the longer and dearer one if they spend the afternoon in a pocket. Fixed braces remove that question.

What to ask before you sign

Every practice above says the real figure comes after an examination and records. When you get the written quote, check these.

  • Is the consultation and records fee credited against treatment if you go ahead?
  • Are retainers in the price, and how many sets? Teeth drift back without them, and replacements are a running cost.
  • Are refinements included if aligners finish short of the plan?
  • What happens to the price if treatment runs longer than quoted?
  • Is the person supervising a registered specialist orthodontist or a general dentist? The Dental Council register shows the scope.
  • Does your health insurance contribute? Some policies have an orthodontic benefit with an annual or lifetime cap; Milk Orthodontics notes it is a Southern Cross affiliated provider.

Common questions

How much do braces cost in Auckland?

From the published lists we read: specialist treatment at Milk Orthodontics from $7,900 for simple cases and $9,900 for comprehensive ones (most commonly $10,400); full fixed braces at All Smiles Dental $4,000 to $12,500; braces over 18 to 24 months at Dentalcare West $6,500 to $7,500. There is no set fee, and the quote follows an examination.

How much is Invisalign in Auckland?

All Smiles Dental's 2026 menu runs from $3,500 (Express) to $9,750 or more (Comprehensive). Dentalcare West lists clear aligners at $3,000 to $9,500. At Milk Orthodontics the aligner price is the same as braces for the same case, from $7,900.

Are braces free for under 18s in NZ?

No. Free dental care up to 18 covers examinations, fillings and extractions. Health NZ lists orthodontics, including braces, among the treatments you pay for. Only severe cases such as cleft palate or significant jaw abnormalities may be publicly funded, on referral.

What does an orthodontic consultation cost in Auckland?

Milk Orthodontics offers a free 20-minute assessment, then a $390 consultation with records and an exact quote. All Smiles Dental charges $150 for an initial orthodontic consultation. Ask whether the fee is credited if you proceed.

Can I pay braces off?

All three practices above offer interest-free plans. Milk Orthodontics quotes from about $60 a week with a deposit; Dentalcare West's example is a $1,500 deposit then $250 a month on a $7,000 plan; All Smiles Dental offers no-interest plans on all orthodontic treatment. Terms are set at the consultation.

Is a specialist orthodontist worth the extra?

For complex bites, children's growth problems and anything involving surgery or impacted teeth, usually yes: that is what the three further years of specialist training are for. For a mild cosmetic tidy-up of the front teeth, a general dentist's aligner case is often appropriate. Either way, ask who will supervise and check the Dental Council register.
