How much should I expect to pay for a full set of dentures?
At the NZDA 2025 fee survey medians, $3,800 nationally and $3,800 in Auckland for full upper and lower dentures. A quarter of Auckland practices charge less than $3,225 and a quarter more than $4,500. Buying both arches together costs less than two singles ($4,000 at the median), because the impressions, bite records and fitting appointments are shared.
How much do partial dentures cost?
The NZDA survey has no row for partial dentures, so the price table above is one Auckland practice's published price list. A partial replaces one to ten teeth and clips onto the teeth you still have. Plastic (acrylic or flexible) partials are the cheaper kind; a cast metal framework is thinner and stronger and costs more.
What does it cost to have teeth taken out and dentures made?
This is the "full clearance" that many people searching for denture prices are really pricing. Add the extractions to the denture. At the Auckland medians, taking out the last 10 upper teeth and fitting a full upper denture comes to roughly:
- Examination $85 + panoramic x-ray $110 = $195.
- Extractions: first tooth $300 + 9 more at $220 each = $2,280, if they are all simple.
- Full upper denture $2,000.
- Total about $4,475. Surgical extractions (median $500 each) or sedation push it up.
What are immediate dentures, and do they cost more?
An immediate denture is made before the teeth come out and fitted the same day, so you are never without teeth. The gums shrink a lot over the following months, so an immediate denture almost always needs relining (a new fitting surface) or replacing once healing settles, and that is a second fee. Ask whether a quote for immediate dentures includes the reline. A conventional denture is made after the gums have healed, which means weeks without teeth but usually one fit that lasts.
What is cheaper, dentures or implants?
Dentures, by a long way. A full upper or lower denture has an Auckland median of $2,000; a single dental implant is about $5,500 for one tooth. "Permanent" or implant-retained dentures sit in between and above: the denture clips onto two or more implants, so even two fixtures at the $2,600 median add $5,200 before the attachments and the denture itself. For one missing tooth a bridge ($4,500 for three units) is another option.
Does WINZ pay for dentures?
Not through the dental grant. Work and Income's dental treatment help, up to $1,000 a year and not repaid, lists dentures among the things it does not cover. Instead it points people needing dentures to recoverable assistance or an advance payment of benefit, both of which are paid back out of your benefit over time. Ask Work and Income about either one, and bring a written quote.
Who makes dentures in New Zealand?
Dentists, and clinical dental technicians, who are registered with the Dental Council to make and fit dentures directly, without a dentist's referral for a full denture. Denture clinics run by clinical dental technicians often quote less than a general practice. Either way, a full denture usually takes four or five appointments over a few weeks: impressions, bite records, a try-in, the fit, and a review to ease sore spots.
Common questions
How much do dentures cost in NZ?
About $2,000 for a full upper or lower denture and $3,800 for a full set, at the national medians in the NZDA 2025 fee survey.
How much do dentures cost in Auckland?
The Auckland median is $2,000 for one full denture and $3,800 for both, and the middle half of practices charge $3,225 to $4,500 for a full set.
Do WINZ pay for dentures?
Not through the $1,000 dental grant, which excludes dentures. Work and Income can help instead with recoverable assistance or an advance payment of benefit, which you pay back.
Does ACC pay for dentures?
Only if teeth were lost or damaged in an accident ACC has accepted. ACC then contributes to the treatment, which can include a denture. Teeth lost to decay or gum disease aren't covered.
How long do dentures last?
Often five to ten years, though the fit changes sooner as the gums and jaw bone shrink. A reline every few years keeps a denture fitting before it needs replacing.
What is cheaper, permanent dentures or implants?
Ordinary dentures are cheapest. Implant-retained ("permanent") dentures cost more than a denture, because each implant fixture has a median of $2,600 in Auckland, but less than replacing every tooth with a single implant.
